Although the historic town of Salem is best known as the site of the Salem Witch Trials, it’s also got plenty of non-witchy attractions, including one of New England’s most diverse and delightful shopping districts and a food scene that gives up nothing to larger cities.

Start your day at the Salem Witch Museum, where you’ll experience the rich (and spooky!) history of the Salem Witch Trials through life-size sets, dramatic lighting, and narration based on actual trial documents.

Return to the full light of day to explore Pickering Wharf, where you’ll find the historic Salem maritime site, and plenty of opportunities to scratch your window-shopping itch. If you’re wanting a little pick-me-up, we recommend Jaho Coffee and Tea for a caffeine fix and a quick bite.

Get your seafood fix at Sea Level Oyster Bar. Not a seafood fan? No worries: The grilled barbeque meatloaf is an excellent alternative.

Get a feel for life at sea ‘circa late 1700’s aboard the Friendship of Salem, a 171-foot replica of the 1797 Friendship. Replica or not, the Friendship of Salem is fitted with 21 sails and twin diesel engines, and serves as a fully functioning United States Coast Guard-certified.

Located in the former Salem Savings Bank (built in 1818!), Ledger Restaurant is the place to experience an inventive menu that transforms traditional 19th century dishes into contemporary masterpieces, all in a setting that evokes its rich history.
